Why do we care about the origin of these cells ? I don’t get it. The use of these cells for research that saves lives is a positive use of cells that would otherwise be destroyed. Why does it matter who they came from

It doesn’t.

The origin matters because informed consent is foundational to medical ethics—taking tissue without a patient’s knowledge or consent, regardless of subsequent benefit, violates fundamental human dignity and autonomy. Henrietta Lacks’ case exemplifies a broader history of exploitation of Black patients and vulnerable populations in medical research, undermining trust that remains essential for ethical research participation today. The principle that beneficial outcomes don’t retroactively justify unethical means isn’t just philosophical—it’s the bedrock preventing future exploitation and maintaining the integrity of the physician-patient relationship.
